Thursday Morning Plenary Session

"Global Learning Service & Social Entrepreneurship"

Plenary Speaker:  Daniela Papi-Thornton, Educator / Consultant, System Change Leadership Group, and Co-founder, Learning Service is a social change educator who brings a decade of emerging market entrepreneurial experience to the field. She spent five years working at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford, and has taught core and elective MBA courses at Oxford’s Saïd Business School. She will be teaching upcoming course at Watson University (Boulder, CO).

Daniela’s thought leadership on social change education has been featured in articles on the BBC and in the Huffington Post. Her article “Tackling Heropreneurship” was the Stanford Social Innovation Review's third most read article of 2016. She has also given multiple talks at global events and TEDx talks on social change and responsible travel.

She now operates the System Change Leadership Group through which she runs global workshops using the ‘Impact Gaps Canvas’, a tool she designed to help changemakers understand the systems in which they operate. Learn more about Daniela in her presenter profile.

Daniela’s plenary session will focus on two key areas of interest among today’s university students and those who advise them: global learning service and social entrepreneurship.

Building upon the years she spent working in social entrepreneurship and educational travel in Cambodia, as well as her more recent role teaching and running leadership programs at the University of Oxford, she will share lessons learned from a dual perspective:

·         An educator working with students during their study abroad experience
·         An educator helping students find their paths to impactful global learning through their home institutions

Daniela will offer participants practical tools to support students’ development as system change leaders, through an engaging and interactive plenary session.

Friday Afternoon Plenary Session

"Students of the Year & Study Abroad Caught on Film: Our 4th Annual Film Festival Finalists Revealed"

Our students never fail to amaze us! We are excited to introduce you to one of our 2017 Ambassadors of the Year, our Blogger of the Year, and our first-ever Global Citizen of the Year. Hear more from them about their experiences abroad and upon return.
We then invite you to join us as we screen our top three finalists’ films from our 2017 Film Festival—three films that were narrowed down from 93 films (a new record!) by our esteemed jury. This year, the winner will be announced at a live Film Festival event at the Museum of Contemporary Art here in Chicago on November 1. We even have a famous emcee, Kate Flannery, who played Meredith in The Office! Thank you for taking a minute to vote, and if you’re in the Chicago area, we hope to see you and your students at the Film Festival.
